Hey Who’s Shaking the House?!? Ohhhh…

We had an earthquake in Hawaii on Sunday, October 15 around 7:10 AM.  It was centered about 10 miles north-norhwest of Kailua Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii and measured 6.5 on the Richter scale.  Not huge by any means but this is the first time in my recollection that I’ve actually felt an earthquake.  My wife and I were up but still in bed when it occured and I didn’t know what was happening until about 15 seconds into the shaking.  We didn’t suffer any injuries or damage in my house but the power went out.  The outage was island-wide on Oahu and our area wasn’t retored until about 2:15 PM.

Although it was a bit of an inconvenience for most of us on Oahu, buildings on the Big Island sustained some structural damage and there were a few rockslides as well.  The famous Kealakekua Bay was actually rearranged by a slide and the Captain Cook memorial was demolished.  The news has so far reported that, amazingly, no one was killed or seriously injured.  Praise the Lord!

We actually went to church and had a minimal service today.  I’m on the Worship Team and of course we played/sang unplugged.  It was all good though because we were still able to lift our voices in praise.  I guess today was a little reminder about who is really in control!
